Bromine and Fire Safety
We live in a modern society where we are surrounded by consumer products, many of which are made out of flammable materials, such as oil-based plastics and synthetics.
Brominated Flame Retardants are chemicals commonly used in many domestic and industrial appliances including: computers, TVs, mobile phones, textiles, furniture, insulation boards and mattresses. More than 70% of electronic appliances are manufactured using brominated flame retardants. Brominated flame retardants are also used in a wide range of materials and textiles for upholstered furniture. Brominated flame retardants essential because they increase a product's resistance to fire. Flame retardants render ignition more difficult, and slow down the spread of fire (up to 15 times longer) allowing people to escape and making firefighter intervention easier.
